Charge nursing at the UAE’s largest tertiary hospital is a leadership role as much as a clinical one. At Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, the Charge Nurse owns the daily operational rhythm of the unit — managing patient flow, staffing and skill mix, staff performance, emergency coordination, and clinical quality simultaneously across every shift. You serve as the primary clinical resource person for your team, the communication bridge between bedside staff and the interdisciplinary team, and the first line of accountability when systems need improvement. Key Responsibilities

• Oversee daily unit operations and patient flow. Liaise with the Nurse Manager to ensure appropriate staffing levels and skill mix on every shift, keeping the environment safe for both patients and nurses.
• Delegate assignments to the nursing team based on each staff member’s capacity, experience, training, and scope of practice. Monitor performance throughout the shift and provide constructive feedback, coaching, and guidance in real time.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care needs directly. Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to deliver patient and family-centred care across the unit.
• Administer medications in line with SSMC policies. Collaborate with pharmacy services to meet the unit’s medication needs. Monitor narcotic and controlled drug handling, storage, and documentation in accordance with DOH and Ministry of Health policies.
• Coordinate referrals and use available resources to ensure comprehensive, timely care and effective discharge planning. Liaise with other healthcare providers as needed throughout each shift.
• Provide comprehensive clinical handover at every shift transition. Attend patient rounds, update attending providers on condition changes, and keep the wider team informed on care plan modifications and unit activity.
• Monitor and evaluate unit operations continuously. Identify problems, lead improvement initiatives, and take corrective action on variances in clinical standards, infection control compliance, and documentation quality.
• Respond to all levels of emergencies per SSMC organisational policy. Delegate to the nursing team during emergencies and coordinate a structured, effective response.
• Identify learning needs of junior staff in conjunction with the Clinical Resource Nurse and Manager. Mentor new staff, support educational activities, and contribute to ongoing professional development across the unit team.
• Report adverse drug reactions, medication errors, incidents, and complaints in line with organisational policy. Complete all required documentation accurately and initiate corrective actions as appropriate.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, or a two-year Nursing degree with registration as a Registered Nurse from Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, or Australia — plus a valid current national licence.
• Minimum six years of post-qualification clinical experience in a relevant healthcare setting.
• Minimum two years of experience as a team leader within a specific clinical unit.
• Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, current at appointment.
• ACLS and PALS certifications relevant to area of specialty are strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to manage unit operations, supervise diverse nursing teams, and lead performance improvement initiatives in a complex clinical environment.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills. You facilitate clear, effective communication between patients, families, clinical staff, and the interdisciplinary team consistently.
• Current professional portfolio maintained in line with DOH policy, with evidence of mandatory competencies, continuing nursing education, and ongoing leadership development.
