Purpose of Laboratory Technologist

At NMC Royal Hospital Dubai (UAE), the job purpose of a Laboratory Technologist is to perform a variety of Technical Laboratory Procedures according to Medical Center, Laboratory and National Standards.He will obtain the patient specimen and ensure the proper quality of specimen used in the Diagnosis and of disease.

Responsibilities of Laboratory Technologist

Lab Procedures

  • Responsible for Performing and Observing Hematological, Biochemical, Serological, Immunological, Blood banking & Immune Hematology, Microbiology and specially requested tests on patients specimens and preparation for send-out.
  • Correctly maintain records and follow up and report all results.

Quality Control

  • To perform and follow Quality Assurance Programmers for various laboratory sub departments.
  • Participate in QC/QI for area of specialty and Lab indicators.

Hospital SOPs

  • Share call duty and work different shifts as required.
  • Immediately notify the patient care unit or physician of any critical test results within acceptable time of the result generation according to hospital and laboratory policies.

Safety and Education

  • Comply with Laboratory safety procedures.
  • Possess adequate knowledge of Instrumentation, Theory, and Application of new and existing tests.

Problem Solving

  • Assume responsibility to resolve problems.
  • Perform required Preventative Maintenance Procedures in laboratory instrumentation.
  • Investigate and resolve technical problems.
  • Consult Supervisor if resolution involves policy or procedure modification.

Inventory Management

  • Maintain Reagents /Consumables /Controls supplies inventory by checking stock, Anticipating needs, placing and expediting orders and verifying receipts.

Documentation

  • Responsible for Accurately completing records and reports and other Statistical Information for master files or databases.
  • Follow Laboratory quality policy and procedures for data retrieval, record keeping, specimen, and identification, requisition, reporting, charting, and billing procedures.

Communication / Teamwork

  • Maintain positive working relationship with the medical staff and hospital personnel.
  • Use positive Interpersonal skills to educate/support lab customers and promote success of team members.

What you’ll do

  • Do not report patient results unless quality control data are within accepted parameters.
  • Recognize out of control values, take corrective action, and notify others of changes.
  • Interact professionally with all department members, physicians’ staff, administration and the Director of Clinical Laboratory and Pathology. 
  • Complete education necessary to maintain Licensure or Certification for the job.
  • Use and maintain all laboratory equipment correctly.
  • Identify real or potential situations or equipment failure, attempt to resolve within area of specialty or knowledge.
  • Refer complex issues to appropriate source.
  • Follow the laboratory safety policies and participate in safety education programs.
  • Attend and follow Continuous medical training and education program.
  • Update Records and documents on a daily basis.
  • Use clear and concise verbal and written communication with staff and the public.
  • Act Independently on Supervisor’s direction and accept responsibility of the adopted.
  • Maintain the Cleanliness and decorum the lab.

Education & Experience

  • Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology.
  • At least two (2) years of Medical Laboratory experience.

Licensure

  • Currently licensed in country of origin and with DHA license to practice in Dubai UAE.

Skills

  • Fluent in spoken & written English, Arabic language is desirable, but not essential.
  • Basic Computer Skills.
