Diabetes education nursing sits at the intersection of clinical management and long-term behaviour change — and the outcomes depend as much on how well a patient understands their condition as on the medications they receive. This Diabetes Educator role at University Hospital Sharjah carries responsibility for the full adult diabetic patient journey across both inpatient and outpatient settings, covering type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. You develop and deliver individual and group education programs, train patients and families on insulin administration and blood glucose monitoring, provide nutritional counselling alongside the dietetics team, and contribute to staff education and diabetes program evaluation. The role also carries a significant MDT coordination function, connecting endocrinology, podiatry, wound care, dietetics, and community health agencies around each patient’s care plan. If your background includes five or more years of acute care nursing with a focus on diabetes education, this role is structured around that depth of experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide outpatient diabetes self-management education and training to adult patients with type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes. Plan, develop, and deliver both individual and group education sessions for patients, families, and care providers.
• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate diabetic nursing care for each patient. Account for individual abilities, cultural background, and patient preferences throughout the care planning process.
• Educate and train patients and families on insulin administration, self-monitoring of blood glucose, medication management, and prevention of diabetes-related complications including renal, lipid, and cardiovascular risks.
• Collaborate with the dietetics department to provide nutritional counselling for weight control and disease management. Integrate dietary guidance directly into each patient’s diabetes education plan.
• Refer patients to appropriate MDT members including endocrinology, wound care specialist nurses, podiatrists, and dietitians. Coordinate seamlessly across departments to ensure continuity of care.
• Assist in training and educating nursing staff on diabetes clinical procedures. Coordinate in-service education, continuing education activities, and clinical diabetes competency assessments across the department.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of diabetes education policies, guidelines, and educational resources for both staff and patients.
• Evaluate the diabetes program on an ongoing basis. Assess teaching methods and educational materials and recommend changes based on outcomes and patient feedback.
• Assist with KPI data collection and analysis. Support administrative billing documentation, insurance approvals, and appointment scheduling in line with facility policy.
• Document all nursing care and patient education accurately in the approved medical record system. Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to JCI, MOH, and UHS documentation standards at all times.

Requirements & Qualifications

• BSc in Nursing or Diploma of Nursing (minimum three-year program) from an accredited institution.
• Minimum five years of post-graduation experience in an acute care facility, with demonstrated interest and involvement in diabetes education.
• Current nursing licence in country of origin and valid UAE Ministry of Health licence — or eligibility to obtain MOH licensure within three months of commencement.
• BLS certification required within three months of employment. Advanced Life Support certification is an advantage.
• Post-graduation Diabetes Educator course or equivalent qualification is strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based diabetes education principles and their practical application across diverse patient populations.
• Computer literacy including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with electronic medical record systems is preferred.
• Fluent written and spoken English. Arabic language skills are a strong advantage in the Sharjah patient environment.
• Previous UAE experience, JCI-accredited hospital experience, and participation in preceptor or education programs are all significant advantages.
