Responsibilities of Wound Care Nurse

  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills to make clinical decisions, develop plans of care and evaluate the effectiveness of care for patients.
  • Develops and promotes activities related to the prevention and treatment of wounds, for the multidisciplinary team that provides total patient care at American Hospital Dubai.
  • Maintains records of pressure injuries (iatrogenic and from the community) in order to verify the appropriateness of hospital’s current medical and nursing practice or demonstrate the need for change.
  • Supports staff in the care of patients with wounds and collaborates with multidisciplinary caregivers in revising treatment regimens.
  • Assesses the educational needs of staff related to wound care, assigns their wound care competencies and assists in providing educational programs for staff in coordination with the unit nurse manager/designee.
  • Teaches, supports, coaches and mentors nursing staff to promote evidence-based practice, knowledge, skills and professional development related to wound care management.
  • Liaises with hospital departments in monitoring standards of care relating to wound care management. Reviews appropriate policies, procedures and updates according to evidence-based, best practices.
  • Assesses, plans, designs, implements, and evaluates educational programs for patients and families in preventative and self-care in relation to wound care techniques (Ostomy care, Vac dressing, wound change, etc.)
  • Visits patients requiring wound care management in a timely manner and evaluates care given. Reports findings to Team.
  • Leader and/or Nurse Manager as necessary, documents findings and plan of care in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

What you’ll do as Wound Care Nurse

  • Coordinate a multidisciplinary approach for efficient wound care management.
  • Participate in unit/departmental meetings and committees/projects as required.
  • Chair the Wound care link meetings and guides the link workers on best practices in wound care management.
  • Manages inventory of wound care-related equipment (Vac machines, wound cart, etc.)
  • Coordinate with external vendors for the procurement of special dressings and consumables.
  • Liaise with and update the Physicians and multidisciplinary team for any significant changes in the plan of care of wounds.
  • Take part in the nursing orientation to orient about wound care services.
  • Assess staff’s skills for wound care management and provides additional training as needed.
  • Perform wound care management in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures and best practice guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate and thorough documentation following established standards.
  • Liaise with Materials Management and the multidisciplinary clinical team to establish and maintain an appropriate line of wound care products for use with the American Hospital Dubai’s patient population.
  • Attends
  • Product Standardization Committee meetings as necessary to promote and advocate for appropriate wound care products.
  • Conduct weekly Wound Care rounds in the inpatient areas along with the surgeon.
  • Conduct daily unit rounds for proactive planning of care of the patients in need.
  • Provide input in the selection of Quality measures related to wound care and collects and analyses data accordingly.
  • Share Quality measures results and action plans with the unit Managers and follows up on the execution.
  • Monitor incidence and prevalence of hospital pressure injuries.
  • Review the Quality Management related to pressure injuries and determine if they are considered Healthcare Acquired Pressure Ulcers/Injuries (HAPU/I), Community-Acquired Pressure Ulcers/Injuries (CAPU/I) or excluded.

Qualifications & Experience

For the role of Wound Care Staff Nurse at American Hospital Dubai, you should meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (minimum of three (3) years full-time course duration). OR Degree in Nursing (minimum two (2) years course duration) and Registration as a Registered Nurse from Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia.
  • For UAE nationals graduates of UAE or non-UAE universities are exempted from the experience and clinical training requirements for the applied title. (UAE National must submit a copy of their birth certificate and the mother’s family book)
  • Non-UAE national graduates from UAE universities are required to successfully complete six (6) months of clinical training post-graduation in an APS health facility (except for Registered and assistant Nurse titles).
  • At least two (2) years of recent post-graduate nursing experience.
  • Post Graduate Degree in Nursing Management/Advanced Wound Care Management preferable.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Must hold a valid License/Registration to practice in their home country and/or country of last employment (where applicable).
  • Must hold a minimum of a valid Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification or others according to the scope of practice.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of and ability to render care and services based on age, appropriateness and developmental needs of patients.
  • Skills in assessment of patient and family’s physical and psychological needs.
  • Skills in coordination and planning of care and prioritizing care based on individual needs.
  • Proficient in problem-solving / critical thinking skills ensuring effective functioning of job performance and technical wound management skills and communicating with the physicians.
