Job Description
NMC Healthcare currently has a job opening for suitably qualified candidate for position of a Histopathology Technologist in NMC Royal Hospital, Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, AE. This is an Intermediate level full time role. For this position salary ranges from 6000-12000 AED, which may be slightly negotiable during the interview process.
Responsibilities of Histopathology Technologist
- Prepares tissue samples for routine microscopic analysis.
- Records gross descriptions of small, uncomplicated specimens where appropriate, using specific terminology according to procedure.
- Prepares tissue samples using correct procedures for preservation, including processing, freezing, and embedding as appropriate per procedure.
- Sections tissue samples using good microtomy techniques on microtomes to produce acceptable quality slides for staining according to procedures.
- Prioritizes and manages workload to meet expected Turn-Around-Times (TATS).
- Maintains competence and acquires new skills as technology changes.
- Stains tissue for Routine, Special Stains, Immunofluorescence, Immunohistochemistry, and Enzyme Histochemistry as requested.
- Prepares, labels, and stores chemical solutions and stains accurately according to procedure and need.
- Performs stains accurately and records Quality Control (QC) results, evaluating stain quality for acceptability prior to releasing histological sections to the ordering pathologist.
- Communicates stain quality results to the supervisor and/or ordering pathologist.
- Develops and institutes new stains as needed, in conjunction with the supervisor, pathology staff, and other technicians.
- Maintains and operates laboratory equipment according to manufacturer recommendations and procedures.
- Operates instrumentation necessary for Histology functions within the manufacturer’s guidelines and according to procedures.
- Recognizes instrument malfunctions and performs troubleshooting to ensure accurate operation; performs and documents instrument maintenance on a scheduled basis.
General Responsibilities
- Works all shifts as scheduled by the Head of Department.
- Strictly adheres to the organization’s regulations and policies, especially those related to infection control, patient safety, EHSMS, HAAD, JCI, and ISO.
- Supports Continuous Quality Improvement and participates in all quality assurance activities of the service.
- Participates in scheduled in-service training programs.
- Exercises effective interpersonal skills in dealings with department staff, associates, and management.
- Maintains confidentiality as per the agreement signed.
- Demonstrates the ability to listen to others in promoting effective communication.
- Develops a thorough understanding of the hospital’s policies and procedures and demonstrates respect for them.
- Carries out other duties as requested by the Head of Department.
- Complies with all OSH and infection control policies, standards, and procedures, and cooperates with hospital management to comply with those requirements.
- Works in accordance with documented OSH procedures and instructions.
- Is familiar with emergency and evacuation procedures.
- Notifies OSH hazards, incidents, near misses, and issues, and assists with the preparation of risk assessments and incident reports.
- Complies with waste management procedures and policies.
- Attends applicable OSH/Infection control training programs, mock drills, and awareness programs.
- Uses appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems.
Requirements for Role of Histopathology Technologist
- B.Sc. in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or an equivalent qualification requiring a training course of at least three years, with one year of specialization in the field of sub-specialty as part of the curriculum. Alternatively, certification by ASCP in the specialty, or an M.Sc./Post Graduate degree in that specialty from an accredited program leading to registration with ASCP/CSMLS or equivalent.
- A minimum of 2 years of Medical Laboratory experience in Histopathology procedures is required for Bachelor’s degree holders. For Post Graduate/M.Sc. holders, one year of Medical Laboratory experience in Histopathology is require.
- Currently licensed in country of origin and holds a HAAD license to practice in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
Skills And Knowledge Desired
- Fluent in spoken and written English; knowledge of Arabic is desirable but not essential.
- Ability to learn and handle automation and IT programs is desirable but not essential.
