About the Role
The Health, Safety and Sustainability Manager will provide strategic and operational leadership in health, safety, and sustainability within the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry. Furthermore, you will oversee the department’s health and safety management system, promote a positive safety culture, and drive sustainability initiatives aligned with the university’s strategic vision. Moreover, the role encompasses incident investigations, risk management, auditing, and ensuring compliance with best practices across the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the department’s health and safety management system
- Conduct incident investigations and implement corrective measures
- Develop and implement risk management strategies for a high-hazard science environment
- Drive sustainability initiatives in line with the university’s strategic vision
- Promote a positive safety culture across the department and wider university
- Carry out regular auditing and compliance monitoring activities
- Coordinate safety training programmes for staff and students
- Manage hazardous materials handling procedures and chemical safety protocols
- Contribute to environmental sustainability reporting and improvement plans
- Liaise with regulatory bodies and ensure adherence to safety legislation
Requirements
- Degree-level qualification with relevant health and safety certifications
- Significant experience in health and safety management, ideally in a high-hazard science environment
- Professional membership of a relevant health and safety body such as IOSH or equivalent
- Strong knowledge of risk management, incident investigation, and auditing practices
- Experience in driving sustainability initiatives within an organisation
- Excellent communication skills and ability to influence safety culture
- Experience in a university or research laboratory setting is highly desirable
