Job Purpose of A Director of Design

A Director of Design oversees and guides the creative direction of a company’s design projects.

Duties of A Director of Design

Design Strategy Development 

• Collaborate closely with the Head of Design to co-create and communicate a comprehensive design strategy that aligns with the organization’s overall vision and goals.

Project Portfolio Management

• Oversee a diverse portfolio of design projects, ensuring they adhere to design standards, project timelines, and budget constraints.
• Lead and guide the design team in maintaining consistent quality across all projects.

Design Consultant Engagement

• Collaborate with external design consultants and identify top-tier Interior Design Consultants/companies to complement in-house capabilities.
• Nurture productive relationships to leverage external expertise when necessary.

Team Leadership

•  Provide dynamic leadership to the design team, including the Interior Design Managers, fostering a culture of excellence, creativity, and continuous growth.
• Mentor team members and facilitate professional development.

Design Direction

•  Offer expert guidance and creative direction to the design team, ensuring that design solutions seamlessly blend aesthetics with functionality.
• Conduct regular design reviews and provide actionable feedback.
• Select and source high-quality, luxurious FF&E items that align with the brand’s identity and vision.

Innovation Advocacy

• Champion design innovation across the organization by encouraging exploration of new technologies, materials, and approaches.
• Foster an environment that encourages creative problem-solving.

Collaborative Partnerships

•  Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Technical Services, Marketing, and Operations, to ensure the integration of design principles throughout all project phases.
• Build and sustain effective working relationships.

Quality Assurance

• Maintain the highest standard of design quality across all projects.
• Conduct thorough quality checks, address any issues promptly, and ensure that designs meet or exceed organizational expectations.

Project Management

• Manage complex design projects, including coordination with cross-functional teams, vendors and contractors to ensure timely project completion within budget.

Trend Analysis

•  Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging design technologies, top-tier Interior Design Consultants/Companies, and creative developments.
• Integrate insights into the organization’s design approach to stay ahead in a competitive landscape.

Who Can Apply?

Qualification

• Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Interior Design or equivalent from an accredited and renowned University.

Experience

• 15 years of progressively responsible design experience, including at least 6 years in leadership roles within the luxury hospitality design domain.

Skills & Knowledge Desired

• Proven track record of successful leadership in design roles within the luxury hospitality industry.
• A portfolio showcasing successfully completed luxury hospitality projects, highlighting design aesthetics, FF&E selections, and guest experiences.
• Extensive knowledge of the design industry, market trends, and emerging technologies.
• Proficient in design software and tools such as AutoCAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Photoshop, etc.
