Purpose of A Staff Nurse Joint Replacement Unit
A registered professional Medical / Surgical (Orthopaedics) nurse who provides direct patient care and coordinates patient care-related activities using the scientific process of nursing. Nursing care given to paediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric population.
Job Duties of A Staff Nurse Joint Replacement Unit
- Demonstrates problem solving / critical thinking skills ensuring effective functioning of unit routine.
- Collaborates with multi-disciplinary team to provide patient care.
- Demonstrates organizational skills as team leader / in-charge nurse.
- Participates in staff meetings and unit committees / projects.
- Demonstrates cooperation, coordination and respect among individuals / departments in order to provide excellent customer service (internal and external).
- Demonstrates cooperation and respect with the nursing supervisor and provides support in bed management.
- Participates in developing and achieving unit goals.
- Performs additional duties when required.
- Demonstrates responsibility for store maintenance and capture of charges.
- Participate in inventory and lost charges count as well as store organization
- Appropriate use of the sick leave system.
- Participate in monthly environmental rounds.
- Responsible for obtaining the required CPD points (15) every year for re-licensure.
- Maintains a safe, hygienic JCI standard unit environment.
- Demonstrates skills in continual assessment of patient, family’s physical and psychological needs and ability to document in line with hospital standards.
- Demonstrates skill in co-ordination and planning of care / clinical pathway, and prioritizing care, based on individual needs. Revises care plan in response to patient needs.
- Demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to render care and services based on specific unit specialities, age appropriateness, and patient care development.
- Performs nursing interventions / procedures in accordance with established standards of care and policy and procedures.
- Assists medical colleagues with diagnostic therapeutic interventions.
- Maintains accurate and thorough documentation following established JCIA and hospital standards.
- Floats to other areas within the hospital when required.
- Shares knowledge and skills with colleagues and others.

- Maintains a safe environment for patients and staff.
- Maintains commitment to professional development of self through completion of unit competent ices i.e. pain management, utilization of auto-transfusion devices.
- As Registered Nurse understands the responsibilities of safe handling, drawing, administrating Narcotic/Controlled Drugs and documentation as directed by policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge and clinical expertise of Infection Control issues, reports and documents as directed in the Infection Control policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates responsibility for maintaining patient medications and refunding to the pharmacy any discontinued medications.
- Demonstrates responsibility for floor stock medications.
- Has a sense of belonging to the unit, is cooperative with fellow staff members, and ready to help out and work overtime when needed.
- Work is performed on any shift as required.
- Ensures a complete and accurate handover has been given to the next shift.
- Maintains clinical and professional competency based on the latest research and established standards of practice.
- Has an understanding of current unit-based PI activities.
- Actively participates in PI Plan by reporting incidents, customer complaints, medication errors, and other KPI events.
- Assesses and documents education needs and provides effective and age appropriate education to patients / families.
- Participates in ongoing educational activities.
- Maintains mandatory educational requirements annually.
- Contributes to professional development of colleagues.
Who Can Apply?
Qualification
- Bachelor Degree in Nursing (duration not less than three years).
Or
- Diploma in Nursing (not less than three academic years in nursing only).
Or
- Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery (not less than three academic years).
Experience
- At least 3 years of recent post-graduate nursing experience.
- Orthopaedics experience desirable.
- Private hospital experience desirable.
Certification
- BLS certification.
License
- Current license to practice nursing.
