Job Description

The Research Fellow (Environmental Sustainability Learning and Engagement Lead) will play an important role in the University of Birmingham Dubai’s project on increasing capacity, and research led teaching, in sustainability education in UAE Schools. This is a Dubai based role for 12 months commencing early April 2024 until completion of the project at the end of March 2025. The Research Fellow will provide overall project facilitation working closely with UAE schools and relevant industry/government organisations and the wider project team at the University of Birmingham (Dubai and Edgbaston campuses) to ensure project milestones are delivered on time and within budget.

Responsibilities of Research Fellow

Main Duties:

  • Liaise with Schools/programmes engaged with sustainability research across both UoB campuses.
  • Lead on school events to be held on and off the UoB Dubai campus.
  • Lead on the production of sustainability teaching materials for schools.
  • Work with industry partners to identify key areas in the Green Skills gap.
  • Support any other outreach activities that will take place during the project.
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters.
  • Manage problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines.
  • Support with administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research.

Job Requirements of Research Fellow

  • Educated to Degree level (or equivalent qualifications) in a subject cogent to a sustainability discipline or possess relevant professional experience.
  • 2 year experience in developing and managing the preparation, planning and delivering of learning programmes both formally and informally including aspects of online and digital delivery.
  • Significant and demonstrable experience of communicating effectively with a diverse range of groups and organisations.

Skills & Knowledge Desired

  • Knowledge of sustainability issues, especially those impacting on the UAE region.
  • Knowledge of the UAE education sector and its delivery incorporating creativity, innovation best practice and current policy.
  • Project management skills.
  • Ability to identify opportunities to develop partnerships and networks.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Competence in using IT, Microsoft Office and online digital tools including a range of social media platforms.
  • Awareness of issues relating to access, social inclusion, cultural diversity and disability.
  • Understanding of the Health and Safety issues and risk assessment procedures associated with working with young people.
