Job Purpose of A Registered Midwife

  • Responsible for delivering direct patient care utilizing the nursing process, to include assessment, implementation and evaluation of care required of the assigned patients.
  • Promotes and restores patients health by establishment of a plan of care and educating patients and their families about their conditions. Collaborates with physicians and multidisciplinary team members, providing physical and psychological support to patients and families.
  • Responsible in the provision of quality nursing care by maintaining accurate records in the EMR and in the maintenance of professional standards as per DoH Scope of Practice, through continuing education and development. Responsible for the orientation and induction training of new, junior Registered Nurses, Practical Nurses and Healthcare Assistants.

Job Duties of A Registered Midwife

Patient Care

  • Assesses patients through the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum phases of pregnancy. Assessing their nursing needs, taking into account their medical, social, cultural and family circumstances.
  • Be able to communicate appropriately with patients in the antepartum, intrapartum and postpartum phase of pregnancy and their spouse and family as well as working in partnership with other health care professionals to ensure continuity of care.
  • Detect labor symptoms in women and provide appropriate nursing care.
  • Monitor patient for contractions and fetal wellbeing.
  • Interpret CTG for contractions and fetal wellbeing.
  • Assist and support Obstetricians and Gynaecologist in treating patient.
  • Assist and support Obstetricians and Paediatricians in treating newborns at delivery and whenever needed.
  • Ensure comfort and support to mothers and infants while executing midwifery functions.

Planning

  • To plan, document and discuss nursing care plan with the patient and family using the nursing process and priorities of nursing care.
  • To continually update the nursing care plan as patient status demands.
  • To appropriately escalate identified concerns according to level of urgency.
  • To commence discharge planning on admission or as soon as it is feasible in collaboration with the patient, family and significant other.

Implementation

  • To use the nursing process to set priorities in the delivery of care.
  • Document in the EMR as required.
  • Coordinate care delivered by multidisciplinary team.

Evaluation

  • To evaluate any and all changes in patient condition.
  • To revise the plan of care as necessary on the basis of evaluation.
  • To communicate evaluation and subsequent plan of care to patient / family / significant others and health the team.

Eligibility Criteria?

Qualification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Midwifery from an Accredited School of Nursing / University. OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing with additional Midwifery qualification.

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of post Midwifery qualification experience.

Certification & Licensure

  • Current DoH License as a Registered Midwife.
  • Current Home Country license.
  • Current BLS Certificate.
  • Current NRP certificate.
  • Current ACLS preferred.
  • K2 CTG training preferred.
