Job Description
The Pediatric Specialist at Kanad Hospital plans and carries out medical care program for children from birth through the age of 13 years and 364 days to aid in mental and physical growth and development. He/ She examines patients to determine presence of disease and to establish preventive health practices. The role holder determines nature and extent of disease or injury, prescribes and administers medications and immunizations, and performs variety of medical duties. Pediatrician renders appropriate care for pediatric patients in the outpatient clinic, inpatient ward, NICU (depending on privileges) and in those cases where a referral to a tertiary care center is more appropriate, shall contact the consultant and arrange referral/transfer to these centers.
Responsibilities of Pediatric Specialist
Outpatient Clinics: Including Pediatric and well-baby clinic
- Examines, diagnoses, and treats diseases and injuries of pediatric patients by reviewing the history and clinical records of the patient. Performs appropriate physical examination, orders and interprets appropriate laboratory, imaging and other diagnostic tests. Prescribes appropriate medication and treatment.
- Records findings, plan and treatment in the patient’s chart or electronic medical record if available.
- Practices preventative medicine whenever possible, such as anticipatory counseling for parents on age appropriate subjects. Provides age appropriate screening examinations, testing and immunizations.
NICU (When applicable per privileges):
- Caring for newborns admitted to the NICU and being involved in training the nursing staff; as needed.
- Should be well versed in the clinical problems a baby above 23 weeks can encounter, like RDS, Sepsis/Shock and complications like Pneumothorax etc.
- Should also be familiar with various modes of ventilation, CPAP, UVC/UAC line insertion etc.
- Should be able to evaluate a case of metabolic disorder in the NB and clinically assess dysmorphologic syndromes.
Labor and Delivery (when applicable per privileges):
- Attends high risk deliveries and C-sections for possible neonatal resuscitation, fetal distress, etc.
- Shall also be responsible for attending Preterm deliveries, MSAF, Breech and mom’s with abnormal CTG.
Inpatient ward:
- Rounds in equal rotation with other pediatricians.
- Teach nurses as and when required and also partake in teaching of registrar.
Pediatric Intermediate Care Unit:
- Manage patients that meet requirement to be admitted to the pediatric intermediate care unit.
- Manage CPAP setting, perform lumbar punctures, peripheral/ central line insertion as well as other procedures applicable to the intermediate care unit.
Role Requirements
Following are the prerequisites for the role of Pediatric Specialist at Kanad Hospital:
- Education: Medical doctor degree with specialization course in Pediatrics.
- Experience: Minimum 2 years’ recent experience post qualification in a hospital setting.
- License: Must be DOH/DHA licensed or DOH passer or DOH exam exempted.
- Shifts: The position has all shifts and on-call shifts. Working hours are 48 hours/week.
- Fluent Arabic language speakers are preferred.
