The role of the Organ Transplant Coordinator at sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, Abu Dhabi, UAE is to coordinate with a multidisciplinary team, and any other appropriate healthcare provider for the provision of quality care for patients, their family members and the community. This role ensures daily screening of ICU admissions for potential organ donor detection and monitors the progress /deterioration of identified patients. This is an Intermediate level full time job. And salary can range between 8000-16000 AED/month.

Responsibilities of Organ Transplant Coordinator

  • Performs an on-site physical assessment of the donor. Examines documentary evidence, and liaises with the Consultant Intensivist and the medical staff required to ascertain suitability for organ donation, in line with appropriate legislation and national policies and procedures.
  • Manages and ascertains families’ understanding of the concept of brain death, which is equivalent to a patient’s death, and determines the most appropriate time to discuss the opportunity for donation with the family.
  • Communicates highly sensitive and complex information to bereaved families where there are barriers to understanding and acceptance, using high-level communication skills due to the emotive atmosphere.
  • Obtains consent in line with legislation and all other relevant policies, ensuring that appropriate documentation is complete.
  • Establishes and maintains effective lines of communication with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensures the safe transfer of the patient to the Operating Theater and continued coordination of the donation process.
  • Collects, recording, and reports key performance indicators data and prepares for audits.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance programs within the clinical care setting
  • Assists in the development of CQI processes for Organ Donation and any other relevant process.
  • Implements donor management protocols, to maximize the placement of organs. This process will include an assessment of the patient’s clinical condition, a review of medical records, and obtaining history from the patient’s medical team.
  • Supports staff and donor family members throughout the retrieval process.
  • Responds promptly and take any necessary action to emerge clinical information throughout the Operating Theater donation process.
  • Participates in clinical performance improvement activities.
  • Gathers, interpret and use data to identify problems and trends and to demonstrate outcomes and cost-effectiveness.

Other Duties as Organ Transplant Coordinator

  • Participates in the development and implementation of Organ Donation projects including Clinical Pathways, Quality Improvement tools, data analysis, and variance reporting.
  • Maintains robust and confidential records of donors, donating procedures, and outcomes in accordance with relevant policies.
  • Develops, provides and evaluates in-house training and in-service educational programs on all aspects of donation for hospital staff.
  • Offers ongoing psychological support to all donor families during and after the process of donation.
  • Participates actively in the training and development of donation services team members.
  • Facilitates and supports general public education, in line with the agreed hospital strategy.
  • Reviews and update policies periodically as per the UAE legislation and as required.
  • Evaluates whether the quality standards of nursing documentation are maintained accurately as per Organizational policy and standards.
  • Facilitates reporting of incidents occurring within the Organization by proper coordination and facilitating corrective action taken.
  • Ensures that quality standards of nursing documentation are maintained according to Organizational policy.
  • Update and report the national registry according to current organ donation policies.
  • Attends required meetings and training sessions to ensure performance standards are met as required by the organization.
  • Documents training and education accurately and timely to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies and organ donation training and accreditation requirements.
  • Maintain all applicable licensing and certifications required by regulatory agencies in relation to organ donation.
  • Identifies and reports key performance measures for OD and report to line manager.

Qualifications & Experience

The requirements for the role of Organ Transplant Coordinator – Nursing Quality at SSMC are as follows:

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.

OR

  • Degree in Nursing (minimum 2 years course duration) and Registration as a Registered Nurse from Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia.
  • Valid/Current national license.
  • BLS certification.

Experience

  • Senior Charge Nurse experience as per DoH PQR with no experience in Organ Donation. OR
  • Charge Nurse experience as per DoH PQR /+ 2 years’ experience Organ Donation.

OR 

  • Staff Nurse experience as per DoH PQR / + 4 years’ experience Organ Donation.

OR

  • Being current SSMC Senior Charge Nurse or Charge Nurse or Staff Nurse with no experience in Organ Donation but completed relevant Organ Donation Training, in lieu of experience required.
