Job Description

The Legal Counsel is responsible to provide proactive and professional legal advice to the University across a broad range of legal and corporate issues, in order to maximize the quality of decision making and mitigate legal risks for the University. Providing legal services associated with the University’s strategic partnerships, research collaborations and commercial activities, by reviewing, interpreting and translating legal requirements. The Legal Counsel is responsible for the promotion of quality decision making in areas affecting the University’s legal obligations and interests.

Responsibilities of Legal Counsel

Operational Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a legal advisor to the University, offering current and relevant legal counsel on matters related to education, research, and business activities.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, statutory regulations, and other formal requirements.
  • Draft, negotiate, and oversee national and international agreements spanning the University’s various activities, including commercial, research, corporate, and student initiatives.
  • Collaborate with relevant University departments to promote awareness of appropriate policies and procedures, ensuring adherence to the legal governance framework.
  • Ensure the University’s compliance with UAE laws and other applicable international laws to mitigate legal risks.
  • Provide legal opinions and prepare memos in response to raised matters.
  • Offer advice and consultation on the University’s policies and procedures.
  • Maintain and archive signed copies of all binding and non binding contracts and agreements, including amendments and addenda.
  • Provide legal opinions on complaints against the University, working closely with relevant departments.
  • Uphold adherence to the University’s information security policies and procedures, promptly reporting breaches and security risks.
  • Coordinate with other departments to facilitate task accomplishment as needed.
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by the Line Manager.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Provide coaching, guidance, and mentoring to enhance the team’s internal capabilities and achieve established objectives.
  • Recommend suitable training courses based on predetermined training needs, evaluate their effectiveness, and monitor results.
  • Conduct performance appraisals for subordinates as per the planned schedules, and recommend necessary actions following established practices.
  • Hold periodic meetings with subordinates to ensure clarity on priorities and smooth workflow.
  • Monitor and manage employees’ administrative affairs, such as vacations, leaves, and other related matters.

Job Requirements of Legal Counsel

  • A Bachelor’s degree in law from an accredited college or university.
  • Expats: A minimum of 12 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, of which 5 years should have been in a Senior Managerial position, preferably in higher education.
  • UAE Nationals: A minimum of 8 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified, of which 5 years should have been in a Senior Managerial position, preferably in higher education.
