Job Description

Deputy Head Mathematics at GEMS Founders School Dubai is responsible to deputize for the Head of Subject Area, manage, and be accountable for the quality of school’s curriculum provision in one of the six subject areas, to promote the fulfilment of the school’s vision.

Responsibilities of Deputy Head Mathematics

  • To articulate a vision for the Subject Area in the context of the school’s ethos and vision.
  • To lead, manage, co ordinate, maintain, develop, monitor and evaluate the school’s curriculum provision in the relevant subject area.
  • To make a full contribution to the processes of planning, resource management, policy development and implementation across the school through the effective leadership and management of all aspects of the work of the subject area.
  • To make a full contribution to ensuring high expectations and standards in all aspects of school life.
  • To work flexibly in supporting the day to day organisation and management of the school.
  • To be accountable to the Teaching and Learning Coach and ultimately the Principal/CEO.
  • To contribute to the school’s Performance Management programme where appropriate.
  • Promoting and ensuring student development, progress and well being.
  • Leading teaching and learning and managing policy within the context of the Subject Area.
  • Leading and managing people and teams.
  • Managing resources.
  • Promoting and representing the House.

  • That the Subject area has internal structures to promote positive behaviour and to manage disciplinary matters in liaison with Head of Student Welfare.
  • Attendance is monitored and considered within the subject area.
  • The analysis and forecasting of trends, for example in progress, overall attainment etc to identify opportunities for improvement in liaison with the Head of School.
  • Liaison with the ELT and SLT for the purpose of referral and review of individual cases.
  • A positive ethos which reflects a commitment by all teaching staff to high. achievement, excellent behaviour, an effective climate for learning, good relationships and equality of opportunity for all.
  • Active observation of / participation in the activities of the Subject Area.
  • The promotion of student engagement in enrichment activities.
  • The development of proactive relationships with external agencies.

Leading teaching and learning and managing policy

  • Much of the work of the Deputy Head of Subject Area is involved with the curriculum and ensuring objectives are being met. Such provision needs to be planned for and evaluated.  The Deputy Head of Subject Area should, therefore, assume strategic responsibility for the quality, coherence; continuity and relevance of the Curriculum, teaching and learning within the context of the school provision, and ensure.
  • There a core programme of schemes of work designed, devised and revised to deliver high quality lessons during contact times. The programme will reflect whole school priorities and have clear relevance and links to the National Curriculum for England, MOE requirements and the wider curriculum needs.
  • Effective liaison with class and subject teachers regarding the delivery of lessons, the monitoring and tracking of planning and assessing.
  • That students placed in appropriate tutor groups in line with school policy and procedures and regarding the placement of students in subject groups.
  • Sharing best practice across all year groups with regards to delivering the curriculum in specific Subject Area.
  • Ensuring consistency of delivering the curriculum across all year groups by mapping the planning and liaising with Heads of Year.
  • Ensuring that Home Learning delivered consistently in the subject area by regularly checking what being shared.
  • Contribution to published materials.
  • That Subject Area policy designed, in all respects, operates within school policy.
  • The maintenance of accurate records of decisions, meetings, interviews and correspondence.
  • Awareness of the dimensions of the wider curriculum and the opportunities for developing and maintaining cross curricular links including work related learning and citizenship.

Leading and Managing People and Teams of Deputy Head Mathematics

  • Developing a positive ethos which reflects a commitment by all class teachers/tutors to high achievement, excellent behaviour, an effective climate for learning, good relationships and equality of opportunity for all.
  • Having an enthusiasm for the subject area which motivates and supports other staff and encourages a shared understanding of the contribution this can make to all aspects of students’ lives.
  • Ensuring that the post holder provides a role model of high quality teaching and learning for all staff.
  • Keeping abreast of current local, national and international developments in the subject area and the dissemination of such information to the teachers thus encouraging team members to keep up to date with new educational developments and to incorporate such developments into their practice as appropriate.
  • Initiating and leading discussion on matters related to teaching and learning within Subject Area activities.
  • Coaching and delivering training to staff on a range of topics relevant to the work of the Subject area.
  • Establishing and maintaining the trust of the team, colleagues, the leadership group, support staff, students, parents/carers and governors.
  • Identifying and minimising interpersonal conflict.
  • Creating and maintaining effective and efficient means of communication with colleagues including formal feedback from staff on issues which affect the quality of curriculum provision and the students’ well being.
  • Planning for the deployment of staff.
  • Contributing to formal annual professional reviews within the school’s Performance Development Policy as appropriate.
  • Identifying, developing and reviewing opportunities for individuals to gain broad experience and develop their skills, including through Performance Development Programme and other planned opportunities.
  • Contributing towards the induction of all new members of staff including the supervision of NQTs in accordance with school policy.

Promoting and Representing the Subject Area

  • Representing the Subject Area at meetings and other appropriate groups including those dealing with enrichment or after school issues.
  • Ensuring that the Principal, SLT, ELT, Staff and governors well informed about Subject Area policies, plans and priorities and that these incorporated into the School Development plan.
  • Submitting information to aid the Principal in writing reports for a variety of audiences and the compilation of references for staff.
  • Promoting a planned enrichment programme to enrich the learning objectives of the school based on subject specific areas.
  • Developing effective links with the local community including parents/carers, business and industry.
  • Playing an appropriate role within the school’s complaints procedure.
  • Liaising with external agencies as appropriate.
  • Working closely with other Middle Leaders to ensure high quality provision for curriculum events and activities.

Manage Finance and Resources

  • Any expenditure is efficiently planned, implemented and monitored.
  • The resources to support and improve pastoral care identified, justified and procured.
  • Costs controlled and value for money maximised.
  • Support staff time is deployed effectively.
  • Accurate inventories maintained.

Job Requirements of Deputy Head Mathematics

  • Required Master Degree in Education.
  • Minimum 2 year experience in similar role.
