ICU nursing demands a level of sustained clinical vigilance that sets it apart from every other ward environment — where subtle patient deterioration must be recognised early, care priorities shift rapidly, and every decision carries direct consequence. This ICU Registered Nurse role at University Hospital Sharjah carries full nursing process responsibility for critically ill patients, from initial assessment and care plan development through to implementation, evaluation, and family education. You direct junior and auxiliary team members within your scope of practice while collaborating closely with the multidisciplinary team across a JCI-accredited acute care environment. If your background includes at least two years of post-graduation nursing experience with a minimum of one year in critical care, this role is structured around that foundation.

Key Responsibilities

• Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised nursing care for each ICU patient. Account for each patient’s clinical condition, cultural background, personal abilities, and right to make informed choices throughout.
• Prioritise patient needs continuously across the shift. Delegate appropriate aspects of care to junior and auxiliary team members within their scope of practice and monitor their performance.
• Monitor patient condition closely and respond to changes promptly. Report significant clinical changes to the responsible physician and initiate emergency safety measures when required.
• Assist physicians with examinations, procedures, and direct patient care activities. Apply current best practice and evidence-based nursing knowledge to all clinical interventions.
• Administer prescribed medications accurately and safely, including narcotics, within approved scope of practice. Follow UHS safe medication administration policy without exception.
• Document all nursing care completely and accurately from admission through to discharge. Maintain records in line with facility medical record policy, MOH requirements, and JCI documentation standards.
• Provide and document patient and family health education based on each patient’s individual nursing care plan. Communicate clearly and sensitively with families navigating critical illness.
• Maintain a safe patient environment by applying infection control practices, adhering to International Patient Safety Goals, and following UHS health and safety policies consistently.
• Maintain unit stock, consumables, and crash cart inventory in line with facility policy on medication expiry dates and safe storage of consumable items.
• Participate in nursing continuous quality improvement initiatives, in-service education programs, unit meetings, and committee functions as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications

• BSc in Nursing or Diploma of Nursing (minimum three-year program) from an accredited institution.
• Minimum two years of post-graduation nursing experience, with at least one year in an ICU or critical care specialty setting.
• Valid BLS certification, current at time of appointment.
• Current nursing licence in country of origin and valid UAE Ministry of Health licence — or clear eligibility to obtain MOH licensure prior to commencement.
• Advanced Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support certifications are strong advantages.
• Knowledge of current evidence-based nursing practice and ability to apply it independently in a critical care environment.
• Computer literacy including proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with electronic medical record systems is preferred.
• Fluent written and spoken English. Arabic language skills are an advantage in the Sharjah patient environment.
• Previous UAE experience, JCI-accredited hospital experience, and participation in preceptor or education programs are all significant advantages.
