This role develops and delivers individualised teaching plans for students with mild to moderate disabilities, therefore modifying the existing curriculum in core subjects (maths, English) to meet each student’s learning requirements. You will collaborate with school counsellors, occupational therapists, psychologists, and parents to help children develop academically, socially, and emotionally. Consequently, your expertise in SEN and inclusive practices will directly ensure that every student can access the curriculum and thrive in a supportive, stimulating environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the educational and social development of pupils under the direction of the Head of SEN and SENCo, therefore ensuring that every student receives appropriate support.
- Undertake initial assessments for students, identify individual learning needs, and ensure that all learners have appropriate Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
- Provide support for individual students inside and outside the classroom in their English and maths lessons, ensuring they can access the curriculum.
- Support students with multiple barriers to learning including autism spectrum, specific learning difficulties, behaviour difficulties (EBD/ADHD/ADD), hearing impairment, speech and language difficulties, and those requiring assistive technology.
- Work with other professionals such as speech therapists and occupational therapists as necessary, then integrate therapeutic strategies into classroom practice.
- Maintain accurate student records, support students with emotional or behavioural problems, and help develop their social skills.
- Contribute to the overall ethos and aims of the school, attend team and staff meetings, and undertake professional duties as assigned.
- Be proactive in matters relating to health and safety, providing a safe and stimulating environment that facilitates learning, and take part in all training courses provided by the school.
Requirements And Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject area (Education, Special Education, Psychology, or related field), plus a recognised teaching qualification or license (PGCE, QTS, or equivalent).
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a similar SEN role, preferably within a school setting.
- Excellent command of English (written and spoken).
- Experience in dealing with or teaching children with learning difficulties or disabilities.
- A special education certification or working towards certification is preferred.
- Successful teaching experience with students with special needs would be an asset.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, establish strong rapport with students, families, and school personnel, and work as a team player.
- Ability to provide personal care for a student with intensive needs, and handle physically or emotionally demanding children (e.g., aggressive, hyperactive students).
- Knowledge of computers and applicable software for record‑keeping and IEP management.
- Clean police check / DBS as required by Taaleem’s safeguarding policy.
